This painting is the portrait of a young fisher on the shore, her basket full after the fishing with the landing net at the background. The girl is dressed with colored clothes typical of the fisher. Eugénie Salanson was indeed renown for her picturesque scenes of young fishers. She exhibited many paintings with such scenes with a very close attention to the treatment of the portrait. She was considered as one of the important female painter at the end of the 19th century.

Biography

Eugénie Marie Salanson (1836-1912) is a French painter of the 19th century and was a student of Léon Cogniet and William Bouguereau. She first exhibited at the Paris Salon 1864 and, later, at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878 and at the London Royal Academy in 1892. By the end of the 1880’s, she bought a villa on the coast (Saint-Pair-sur-Mer), and continued painting young fishers on the beach.

Museology

Works by Eugénie Salanson are preserved in France (Museum of Châteauroux, Portrait of a young girl) and abroad (Canada, Montréal, The Fisher).
